Friday 29 July 4.30pm

Henry Plaza, Woking Town Centre (indoor space outside M&S)

“Doorstep Duets” was originally created in 2021 by New Adventures and Farnham Maltings as a response to social isolation caused by the pandemic and to make dance more accessible.

This year there are two brand-new Doorstep Duets: “Ding Dong” and “High Tide”, offering free opportunities for people to enjoy world-class performances in their local neighbourhood and through community-based organisations.

Dance Woking will be working with local organisations to take performances to the doorsteps of Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing residents at Westfield Common, Pleiades Leisure, Woking Borough Council, Victoria Place Shopping Centre; Stanwell Events, Staines; as well as performing for clients of Woodlands House, Kettlewell House, Mayford Grange Village, Kings Lodge Care Centre, Hale End Court, Greenview Hall, Dance Woking Club4 attendees & Woking Women’s Liaise Centre.

Performances in Woking are part of a wider tour where New Adventures and House Theatre are working with several venues and organisations across the Southeast of England including: Farnham Maltings; Surrey County Council; Dance Woking; The Old Market, Brighton and Hove; Sussex Dance Network; Margate Pride; Gulbenkian, Canterbury; The Alex, Faversham; Mercury Theatre, Colchester; Dance Network Association; Watford Borough Council; Dacorum Community Dance; BEEE Creative and Greenwich and Docklands International Festival (GDIF).

The creation of these two pieces has been overseen by New Adventures Take Part Creative Director, Kerry Biggin and New Adventures Associate Artistic Director, Etta Murfitt MBE: “We have an ambition to reach even more people with Doorstep Duets this year and I can’t wait to see how the audiences connect to the work.”

Escape from the everyday and immerse yourself in the stories, which in true New Adventures style, are lively, characterful, and full of happiness.

“Ding Dong” by Sophia Hurdley, is a touching duet that tells the story of an unlikely friendship between two detached individuals during unprecedented times.

Sophia Hurdley joined New Adventures in 2002 and most recently starred as ‘Irina’ in “The Red Shoes” in 2019/20. She is a workshop leader for the company and works on the company’s outreach programmes and talent development schemes. Sophia’s choreography credits include: “Happy Prince Musical” and “The Place”.

“High Tide” by Daisy May Kemp invites you to come to the water’s edge to follow five people’s journeys as they navigate life’s choppy waters. If someone is all at sea we help them back on board, adjust the sails and continue together. No person is an island.

Daisy May Kemp joined New Adventures in 2005 and most recently starred as ‘Queen Candy’ in “Nutcracker!” and ‘Netta Longdon’ in “The Midnight Bell”. She has taken on the roles of Dance Captain, Assistant to Tour Director, Resident Artist and Resident Practitioner, as well as working on New Adventures outreach programmes. Her choreography credits include Assistant Choreographer for La Traviata at Glyndebourne and for A Midsummer Night’s Dream at ENO.

They will be leading dance skills workshops in Kathak and Bollywood Dance styles as well as performing a short piece. Come and check them out at 10.30 & 1pm in Victoria Place, Woking on Saturday 11th June.

AKDC perform in Woking Town Centre, September 2021

Amina Khayyam Dance Company is a professional international touring dance–theatre company that uses the south Asian form Kathak as the core narrative in making new work in collaboration with the marginilised female voice, adding to it other media and forms such as theatre, live art, and technology.

AKDC treats Kathak as a contemporary form and thereby transcends any ‘classical’ or ‘modern’ precepts to its approach. It believes the dance form is evolving with progressions demanded by the contemporary zeitgeist, in the same way it did so from the demands of the Mughals, the last time it took a major step forward. At its heart, Kathak is a storytelling form. With its rich history, it is uniquely placed and equipped to tell new and urgent stories of global importance.
