Funding Success from Shanly Foundation

We are thrilled to announce that we have been successful in a funding application to Shanly Foundation Group . Shanly Foundation aims to support causes that help individuals and benefit the local community, including support for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, the homeless, those with mental health issues and people with physical disabilities, injury or life limiting illness.

The donation will go towards helping to prevent elderly people from feeling isolated through the provision of our Travelling Tea Dance.

Expanding on our very successful Easter Travelling Tea dance, Katie & Michaela will be leading interactive dance sessions in 5 assisted living settings around Woking providing a chance for residents to watch, interact and move. The Summer Travelling Tea dance will be a celebration of all Summer events, including the Jubilee, Wimbledon and Summer Holidays!

Our travelling tea dance aims to support the 5 ways to wellbeing by:

  • By connecting with others
  • Being active
  • Take notice through the themes and dance styles
  • Learning through new dance steps and styles
  • Give – through shared memories support

We have a wonderful Summer programme planned and we can’t wait to share it with the residents of the locations we will be visiting – more information will be revealed soon!

This project has funded in collaboration with Shanley Foundation, Community Foundation for Surrey and Woking Borough Council as part of our ambition to improve dance provision for the over 65’s.

Amina Khayyam Joins Encounters Event!

Amina Khayyam will be kicking off our Encounters event on Saturday 11th June with a wonderful workshop for all to attend! They will be leading dance skills workshops in Kathak and Bollywood Dance styles as well as performing a short piece. Come and check them out at 10.30 & 1pm in Victoria Place, Woking on Saturday 11th June.

AKDC perform in Woking Town Centre, September 2021

Amina Khayyam Dance Company is a professional international touring dance–theatre company that uses the south Asian form Kathak as the core narrative in making new work in collaboration with the marginilised female voice, adding to it other media and forms such as theatre, live art, and technology.

AKDC treats Kathak as a contemporary form and thereby transcends any ‘classical’ or ‘modern’ precepts to its approach. It believes the dance form is evolving with progressions demanded by the contemporary zeitgeist, in the same way it did so from the demands of the Mughals, the last time it took a major step forward. At its heart, Kathak is a storytelling form. With its rich history, it is uniquely placed and equipped to tell new and urgent stories of global importance.
