Encounters – Celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Dance Woking is hosting Encounters to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on Saturday 11 June with a day of dance in it’s many forms in Woking Town Centre! 10.30am – 4pm

During the day we are combining community performances from dance schools and school groups and professional performances from Folk Dance Remixed and Amina Khayyam Dance Company.

Folk Dance Remixed perform Step Hop House a fresh, quirky, colourful,  high-energy, theatrical professional performance offering a unique remix of Maypole, Clogging, Ceilidh, Street, House and Breakdance with a hint of African & Bollywood to a live soundtrack of fiddle, bass, percussion & beat boxing. Performed by a diverse cast of 6 dancers and 3 musicians it’s a folk and street dance performance like you’ve never seen before.

Following the performance there will be a ceilidh for you the audience to join in and have a go and Maypole dance workshop (places limited, booking recommended).

Amina Kahyyam Dance will be leading dance skills workshops in Kathak and Bollywood Dance styles as well as performing a short piece.

At 11.30am and 2.15pm there will be two very special performances; the first at 11.30am performed by over 150 school children from eight schools: Woking High, Kingfield Primary School, Horsell CofE Junior School, Broadmere Primary Academy, New Monument Primary Academy, Sythwood Primary School, Beaufort Primary School and Dance Woking’s Sports Youth Group (Sheerwater Youth Centre). the second at 2.15pm by the Dance Schools performing in the platform

Encounters starts at 10.30 and is FREE to attend. Please do come and support us and all the dancers performing on the day.


Following their performance Folk Dance Remixed will be hosting a FREE Maypole Workshops and a Ceilidh Jam!

Join in the fabulously fun funky social dance Ceilidh Jam and a Street Dance the Maypole workshop where you will be shown how to create wraps ‘n ripples mixed with waves ‘n breaks around a contemporary designed, bespoke ribboned, maypole… all to live music with remixed twists!

A chance for all ages to get their hands on the maypole and dance together with a funky street dance routine mixed with folkie maypole moves, such as the Chrysanthemum Wrap and The Ripple.

Suitable for 8yrs and up, if younger they must be accompanied by an adult.

Folk Dance Remixed are a ground-breaking company creating unique fusions between Folk and Hip Hop styles with live music. Led by Artistic Directors Kerry Fletcher and Natasha Khamjani, the company rediscover old traditions through contemporary forms.

Workshops are for 8yrs+ (unless accompanied by an adult). Workshops will last a max of 30minutes.
