Amina Khayyam Dance Company DOUBLE BILL

Dance Woking presents an Amina Khayyam Dance Company (AKDC) Double Bill as part of this exciting new Mini Mela Festival in Woking

Two Kathak dance pieces, thematic from a south Asian feminist perspective, written & choreographed by Amina Khayyam.

Manchild

A solo piece expressing the feminist aftermath of a beautiful, aspiring, ‘as good as on a silver screen’ relationship gone sour – through an exploration of the growing existentialism of the South Asian male in face of economically challenging and an emotionally strong South Asian woman.

BIRD

A stage sequel to AKDC’s critically acclaimed dance film Catch The Bird Who Won’t Fly started in a workshop with a women’s community group – where a participant asked – “What happens to a woman when she runs away from domestic abuse?” .. the tone, the expression, the nervousness in her voice, the looking away after she asked the question, prompted this scalding emphatic kathak fluence-d piece exploring the social stigma for women in such a situation.

We recommend watching of Catch The Bird Who Won’t Fly before the show.

All pieces feature original music performed live by internationally acclaimed musicians: – Debasish Mukherjee on tabla, Jonathan Mayer on tenor sitar and Iain McHugh on cello.

Followed by an after show discussion

House opens at 7pm, performance commences at 7.30pm

Please note this performance has a guidance of 12years +

Mini Mela Festival

A Celebration of South Asian Cultures

Dance Woking is delighted to be hosting its first Mini Mela Festival – A Celebration of South Asian Cultures in partnership with Amina Khayyam Dance Company (AKDC) who are curating the programme. This festival has been made possible by funding from Arts Council England’s Project grants scheme, Woking Borough Council, AKDC and support from Woking based Women’s Liaise Group.

Amina Khayyam is well known in Woking and Surrey for her work with South Asian Ladies groups and raising challenging topics that impact the community. Dance Woking has worked with the company for over a decade and looks forward to highlighting South Asian culture in this way. In September 2021 in partnership with Dance Woking, AKDC & Women’s Liaise Group, a guerrilla style pop-up exhibition and performances were presented in Peacocks Shopping Centre to great acclaim and likened to the Southbank by passers-by, called Katha-K and raising awareness of mental health issues and loneliness caused by Covid19.

The festival programme opens on Thursday 23 February with Striped Sari, performed by highly acclaimed Kathak dancer and choreographer Amina Khayyam. The programme created for this Mini Mela features work not previously seen in Woking before and includes a cabaret evening with live music and comedy on Friday 24 February, film screening at the Nova cinema (date TBA) and closes with a Double Bill on Saturday 4 March featuring a Double bill from AKDC, Bird and Manchild

As part of this festival, Dance Woking would like to invite community groups to join us as we celebrate South Asian dance and culture, from Bollywood, Kathak to Bharatanatyam, to name a few dance styles in what we hope will be a highly entertaining platform, with a mixed programme, showcasing the best of South Asian dance in Woking & Surrey. The Mini Mela – Community Dance Platform takes place on Saturday 25 February at Buzz Studio, Level 1, Peacocks Shopping Centre, Woking, GU21 6GH.

Do you have a group that loves to dance and would like to take part or have more information on how to apply? If you are a South Asian inspired community group that would like to take part in this unique platform, or would like to know more please contact us.

The closing date to apply to take part in the community dance platform is Friday 3rd February.
