Dance Woking’s Summer Outreach
This is the fifth year Dance Woking programmed and coordinated the dance activity at Party in the Park and once again we saw this as a great opportunity for schools and community groups to get involved in dance activity as well as performance. Dance Woking secured funding through Active Surrey’s Sportivate scheme, which enabled us to offer a subsidised rate to schools and community groups to take part in a series of dance workshops; this year we focussed on getting less active young girls in year 5 and Year 6 to engage in activity using dance as well as the older teenagers 16plus.
Through support from Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts scheme we were also able to expand our activity to include younger children which enabled us to bring together a diverse intergenerational group to perform at Party in the Park in both the Martian Parade and Dance Woking led Sci Fi Flash mob.
With funding support from Johnson Wax Ltd Charitable Trust we were able to offer schools and community groups taking part in the dance workshops an opportunity to work with Imogen Andrew, one of Woking Borough Council’s featured visual artists to create their own bespoke Martian Tabards.
With the theme and celebrations set around the 150th Anniversary of HG Wells it was great to receive fantastic support from the Horsell community. Schools & Community groups who took part included:
Horsell Junior School, Horsell Village School, Horsell Beavers, The Park School, Westfield Primary School, Woking College, The National Citizen Service (NCS) group working with Dance Woking. Encounters on Saturday 2 July in Woking Town Centre; Workshops were also delivered at York Road and Woking Borough Council offices.
In total Dance Woking engaged with 384 people in outreach activity during June & July 2016.

In November we will once again be hosting our Young Dance Makers platform and would encourage schools and colleges interested in taking part to contact Dance Woking. Due to popular demand we will again host the performances over two nights on Tuesday 22 November & Wednesday 23 November. Contact Dance Woking’s office for further information.
